It’s the Fourth of July. While you may be celebrating through Zoom or social distancing, that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. If you are drinking, be safe! And if you do go a little too hard, don’t worry. We’ve all been there. At IV Revival, we can help you get back on your feet, so any lingering fireworks won’t destroy your head.
We’re talking, of course, about a hangover. Hangovers happen after you’ve consumed too much alcohol and not enough of other things, like water or food. Alcohol is diuretic, meaning it increases the production of urine. This means you’ll lose a lot of fluids, including water, vitamins, and electrolytes. It can also lead to vomiting, which furthers the loss of the fluids.
The end result of too much alcohol? An uncomfortable morning.
Symptoms of a hangover include:
- Dehydration
- Nausea
- Headache
- Upset stomach
- Muscle aches
- Vertigo
Fortunately, there are ways to find quick hangover relief.
Quick Hangover Cures
There isn’t one magical way to get rid of a hangover, especially if it’s really bad, but these steps are scientifically proven to help. The first thing you should do is rehydrate yourself!
As mentioned above, alcohol is diuretic. So, to combat the loss of fluids, you’re going to need to drink water. But water isn’t enough to cover it, especially if you have a bad hangover. Your body is telling you that it needs electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium) and vitamins.
You may be nauseous while hungover too, which makes it difficult to keep anything down. Try to take a few sips of water and then give us a call. Our registered nurses will be right over to give you an IV of pH-balanced fluids, electrolytes, and vitamins to help you get back on your feet. All you have to do is open your door and answer a few questions before the IV is hooked up.
The whole procedure takes between 45-60 minutes on average, and you’ll start feeling better right away.
Try Taking These Vitamins!
Because alcohol is a diuretic, it causes you to lose a lot of vitamins and nutrients. The most helpful vitamins you can get are B-complex and C.
B-complex is a mix of vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), folic acid, B6 and B12, among others. It combats hangovers by fighting fatigue and boosting the function of your brain and nervous system.
Vitamin C
Taking vitamin C during a hangover actually helps remove any alcohol left in your system and flushes toxins from your liver. Not only that, it is proven to protect your body from oxidative stress caused by alcohol. In a study, researchers used rats to test the effects of vitamin C and alcohol. The study found that vitamin C can help lessen the amount of damage to your liver from alcohol. .
According to the study, “Vitamins E and C are naturally occurring antioxidants that protect against oxidative damage caused by free radicals… Oxidative stress has been considered as a conjoint pathological mechanism, and is believed to contribute to the initiation and progression of liver injury.”
Magnesium
Magnesium and zinc can help you feel revitalized. Magnesium, as well as other electrolytes, will help you rehydrate as well. If you have a headache, magnesium does wonders to alleviate the pain.
Zinc
Zinc is required by the enzymes that help to break down alcohol in your body, so supplementing it in can help your body to fight that hangover. Zinc also boosts your immune system and helps to decrease inflammation in your body.
