At IV Revival, we’re proud to always be looking for the best and healthiest vitamins, minerals, and natural and healthy building blocks to add to our menu. That’s why we’re happy to announce our latest menu option: NAD+.
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme that fuels hundreds of metabolic processes like cellular energy and mitochondrial health. It fuels reduction-oxidation reactions, carries electrons from one reaction to another, and acts as a co-substrate for other enzymes such as the sirtuins and poly(adenosine diphosphate–ribose) polymerases.
In less scientific terms, it helps combat aging, improves metabolism, and slows neurodegeneration.
How NAD+ Works
Within your body, nicotinamide riboside (a form of vitamin B3 also known as niacin) is converted into NAD+. During this process, NAD+ becomes a helper molecule that supports many aspects of healthy aging. It does so much more too.
NAD+ acts as fuel for many key biological processes, such as
-
Converting food into energy
-
Repairing damaged DNA
-
Fortifying cells’ defense systems
-
Setting your body’s internal clock or circadian rhythm
NAD+ Deficiency
Lack of NAD+ can lead to chronic fatigue, apathy, depression, anxiety, a weakened immune system, muscle pain and weakness, headaches, memory disturbance, sleep problems, focus and concentration defects and other chronic diseases.
Low NAD+ levels have also been linked to health concerns like aging and chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and vision loss. More research is required to learn what can cause the deficiency and how widespread it may be.
NAD+ Helps with Aging and Brain Health
There is no such thing as the Fountain of Youth, but NAD+ is coming close to it. Studies have shown that groups of animals introduced to NAD+ experienced improved lifespans, better health, boosted stress resistance, and reduced inflammation.
These studies also looked at using NAD+ and other enzymes to help protect your DNA, thus slowing the aging process.
May Help Protect Brain Cells
NAD+ plays a key role in helping your brain cells age well. NAD+ helps control the production of PGC-1-alpha, a protein that helps protect cells against oxidative stress and impaired mitochondrial function. Oxidative stress is the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in your body. This means that molecules in your body are more likely to react with other molecules, which can be both beneficial and harmful.
They are harmful when oxidative stress occurs, which impairs your body’s ability to fight off pathogens.
The other half of this is the mitochondrial function. The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell and in charge of producing energy for your entire body.
Researchers believe both oxidative stress and impaired mitochondrial function are linked to age-related brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Human studies are underway to better understand the relationship between NAD+ and these diseases.
In mice with Alzheimer’s disease, vitamin B3 and NAD+ raised brain NAD+ levels and PGC-1-alpha production by up to 70% and 50%, respectively. By the end of the study, the mice performed significantly better in memory-based tasks
May Lower Heart Disease Risk
Did you know that aging majorly increases your risk factor for heart disease? It can cause blood vessels to become thicker, stiffer, and less flexible, which can lead to higher blood pressure and overworking your heart. While NAD+ can’t prevent old age, it can help reduce your risk of heart disease.
NAD+ is proven to help reduce the stiffness in the aorta (a blood vessel in your heart) and lowered systolic blood pressure in adults at risk of high blood pressure.
How Can You Get NAD+?
Here are a few ways you can increase your NAD+ production naturally:
-
Intermittent fasting
-
Taking nicotinamide riboside (vitamin b3) dietary supplements
-
Exercise
-
Avoid excessive exposure to direct sunlight
-
Drink dairy milk
-
Eat salmon
-
Sardines
-
Mushrooms
-
Whole grains
-
Green leafy veggies
-
Foods with yeast
-
-
Drink less alcohol
IV Revival allows you to receive NAD+ through an IV while you’re at home. You won’t have to worry about changing your diet, increasing your exercise, or reducing your alcohol intake (though all of that will boost your health in addition to the IV). Instead, all you have to do is request an appointment. Our registered nurses will come to you and administer the IV.
