Food poisoning isn’t fun. We’ve all had it and we all know the literal gut-wrenching pain that is associated with it. What if we told you there was a way to relieve some of that pain without waiting for it to pass? Our mobile IV services send nurses to your door to administer treatments directly into your veins — by bypassing your stomach, it won’t add to your distress, only soothe it.
Here’s how.
What is Food Poisoning?
Food poisoning, also called foodborne illness, is a sickness caused by eating contaminated food. Symptoms can start within hours of consuming the food and usually resolve themselves without treatment.
Symptoms include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Watery or bloody diarrhea
- Abdominal pain and cramps
- Fever
Food Poisoning Treatment
Treatment for food poisoning typically depends on the source of the illness, if known, and the severity of your symptoms. For most people, the illness resolves without any treatment. But if you need a little extra help, here’s what you can do.
Replacement of Lost Fluids
Food poisoning often results in loss of bodily fluids, so it’s important to rehydrate and replace electrolytes to prevent dehydration.
Stop Eating and Drinking Temporarily
Let your stomach settle for a few hours when you’re experiencing food poisoning. Stop eating and drinking for a few hours to help calm your stomach down. Avoid certain foods like dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and fatty or highly seasoned items until your stomach calms down.
But this blog just said to hydrate? You’re right! Hydrating is important, but not in large quantities when your stomach is upset. Try sucking on ice chips or taking small sips of water. You might also try sipping clear soda, clear broth or non-caffeinated sports drinks. You might also try oral rehydration solutions if you have severe dehydration symptoms or diarrhea. You’re getting enough fluid when you’re urinating normally, and your urine is clear and not dark.
You can also get an IV! An IV delivers hydration directly into your bloodstream and bypasses your digestive system. Your body will absorb what it needs and flush what it doesn’t in a day or so (after your symptoms have passed).
IVs also can contain more than just hydrating fluids! At IV Revival, our mobile IV service can include vitamins and nutrients that can help ease your symptoms.
Vitamins That Help Ease Food Poisoning Symptoms
Vitamin B Complex
B vitamins are important to keep up your energy and allow the immune system to function properly. This is particularly true of the B vitamin pyridoxine (B6) which helps immune cells (white blood cells) to ramp up in the face of infection. Additionally, pyridoxine (B6) has been shown to improve nausea so much it’s the first line therapy to treat morning sickness.
Vitamin B12 helps make DNA, nerve, and blood cells including your immune system. Cobalamin (B12) acts as an immunomodulator, increasing the number of immune system cells called lymphocytes (white blood cells) for both innate and adaptive immunity. As seen in B12 deficiency, the numbers of these crucial cells are decreased and function poorly. As an added benefit when you’re feeling run down, B12 will also give you a bit of your energy back.
Glutathione
Glutathione is possibly the most important molecule you need to stay healthy. Glutathione is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent as it inhibits the production of most inflammatory molecules called cytokines. This not only helps treat the pain and aches associated with your illness, but also helps keep you from getting sick.
Anti-Nausea
Have you been feeling queasy or throwing up? This medicine works directly in the areas of the body to block the transmission of signals in your nervous system that has caused your upset stomach. This medicine is very effective so take solace in knowing your nausea and vomiting should end quickly.
Anti-inflammatory
Do you need something to take care of your aches, fever, headache, and/or generalized pain quickly? That is exactly what our anti-inflammatory medication will do. This is by far the quickest way to get your productivity back and at the least, feeling well enough to function.
